Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. We have a unique opportunity to bring about balance to children in schools. Martial arts training emphasizes focus, discipline, respect and honor. These are qualities badly needed in society. There are several mixed martial arts champions who train and live here in New Mexico, and children look to them as role models.

Traditional martial arts training has been in place in schools throughout Asia for a long time. The children line up in the mornings to practice exercises such as tai chi and qi gong. This helps with concentration and health.

What is Integrative Medicine, and how is it going to change healthcare?

Integrative Medicine is a way of practicing medicine in which conventional and alternative medicine is blended together to bring about healing to body, mind, and spirit. The current healthcare system is about to go through a huge change and it could be really good for patients. Chiropractic physicians are some of the leaders of Integrative Medicine.

Now that the Supreme Court decided that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act(PPACA) is constitutional, the law will continue to go into effect. States will move toward establishing Health Insurance Exchanges(HIE) and they will have the opportunity to expand Medicaid. The new model will be Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). These groups will be integrating different providers in order to bring about the best coordinated care for patients.

Health and Wellness is going to become much more common place in the new system. Chiropractors in Albuquerque, New Mexico are going to lead the way for change in the health care field.

New Year’s Eve is approaching quickly. This is the time of the year in when the gym memberships are the highest. Everyone is trying to get into shape after abusing their bodies with high sugar content desserts and overindulging with the holiday foods. Unless you are big in winter sports, chances are that you don’t get out much to exercise during this time of the year.

New year‘s resolutions can be extremely life changing. I smoked my last cigarette on December 31st, 1999 because of a resolution. It took an extremely important date such as this to help me break the habit. The trick is to make small attainable goals and to stick with them. Rather than trying to say your resolution is “to be healthier” try making a specific small attainable goal like “I am going to walk for 20 minutes 3 times a week”.

Once you have gone through one year of achieving your resolution it becomes empowering. The next year you will be able to achieve a more far reaching goal. If you try making an unattainable resolution it might be discouraging to try it again next year. Some suggestions for resolutions are:

- Eating vegetables and fruits every day.

- Exercising for 30 minutes per day.

- Deep Breathing exercises or Meditation every day.

- Picking up an old hobby.

- Making an appointment for a chiropractic wellness checkup.

After training hard on Tuesday night I started to feel some discomfort in my arms and legs. The diagnosis? Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). There are several theories on the causes however most come down to one thing, muscle and connective tissue damage. DOMS occurs after vigorous workouts with eccentric contractions. Eccentric means that your muscle is lengthened as it is contracted. Concentric means that your muscle is shortened while contracted. Isometric means that your muscle is contracted without shortening or lengthening.

Researchers used to think that Lactic Acid caused the soreness however that is not longer the perception. Lactic acid is changed into energy through a series of reactions. A more legitimate argument can be made that DOMS is caused by parts of the cellular machinery of the muscle being damaged. Your body responds by making more powerful muscles in response to the stress. It can take up to 72 hours to get back to feeling normal, but you will be stronger.

In order to have a good work out you do NOT need to feel sore however if you do there are some things that you can try. There will always be conflicting evidence on modalities efficacy. Myofascial therapy or massage seems to help with the pain and so doe the application of hot moist heat. I have found taking magnesium can help tremendously and topical pain gels such as BioFreeze and Traumeel help a lot as well. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can be effective as well. Performing light exercise helps to get through the pain most likely due to the inhibiting effect that proprioceptors(nerves that let your brain know where your body parts are in relation to each other) have on nociceptors(nerves that transmit pain signals).

If you experience DOMS after working out for the first time in a long time realize that it will get better and do not let it discourage you from working out.

I have often said: “In order to know how to heal you must know how to destroy.” I doubt that I came up with it but it has always described how I feel that Martial Arts and Health and Wellness go hand in hand.

I am from the generation of the Karate Kid and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I am proud to admit it. Watching the UFC in the early days was the vice of choice for my friends and I. We would grapple for hours at a time and would develop all different types of aches and pains. Whether I was getting kicked in the head by a black belt in Tae kwon do, thrown by an experienced judoka, pummeled by a Win Chung master, or just in a very bad head lock by a street fighter friend, I have put my body through an amazing amount of trauma.

There have been times in which I have broken bones although they have not been my own. Ribs and teeth are sometimes the first to go. Most of my injuries have been concussions and soft tissue injuries. From a chiropractor’s point of view it has helped me to understand the painful injuries that are a normal part of a martial artist’s life.

I had the opportunity to train at Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn’s gym tonight. I participated in a Muy Tai Kickboxing class and a grappling and wrestling class as well. It was a lot of fun and I learned a great deal of technique.

The style that I have practiced the longest (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu) does not typically use mouth guards, boxing gloves, or shin guards for protection but they are very useful in this gym.

If you are a martial artist who lives with pain from trauma sustained during training call today to see how I can help you.

The athlete’s injured arm was placed in a sling as he was taken out of the octagon and to the hospital. Ice was applied to reduce the inflammation and pain medications were prescribed. The fracture was diagnosed by Xray (radiograph) as a distal diaphysis humerus fracture. The humerus was then set in normal alignment and then placed in a cast. Surgery will most likely not be indicated because of the body’s amazing capacity to heal itself. The body will send cells known as osteoblasts (bone builders), osteoclasts (bone destroyers), and many other cells that will replace the injured tissues.

Proper nutrition consisting of amino acids and other building blocks will be required for the athlete’s arm to properly heal. After a couple weeks another radiograph will be performed to ensure proper union is taking place. His muscles will start to atrophy however exercising his opposite arm with reflexively keep some of the atrophy from occurring. Physical therapy will begin and strengthening exercises and mobilization will be performed.

Dana White the owner of the UFC has the final word in whether or not Nogueira will able to continue to fight in the octagon.

Arthritis is a general term that implies inflammation in a joint. There are numerous classifications of the disease. Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions are the leading cause of disability in the United States. This makes it a major Public Health problem. Diagnosis is determined by history, physical Inexamination, and diagnostic testing. The easiest way to classify various types of arthritis is to group them together in categories. There is a lot of overlap with some types of arthritis and this is not an extensive list.

1. Degenerative

2. Rheumatic

3. Inflammatory

4. Metabolic

5. Immune Modulated

-Degenerative Arthritis is also referred to as Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is the most common form of arthritis and it is suggested that if you live long enough you will develop it in your lifetime. Many develop it as early as their 20s or 30s. It can be managed with manipulative therapies and exercise.

-Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the most recognized forms of arthritis. It is usually manifests symmetrical in the body and a very common area is in the hands. It does not only affect joints it is also in the connective tissues of the body and can have many other symptoms associated with it. Management can consist of dietary changes as a main form of treatment.

-Inflammatory Arthritis is a classification that can include Rheumatoid arthritis and many others. Some other examples would include Psoriatic Arthritis in which there are skin lesions and nail changes associated with joint pain. Some STDs can create diseases such as Reactive Arthritis in which there is an infection in the urinary system, the eyes and joints.

-Metabolic Arthritis includes types such as Gout, Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate, Hydroxyapatite and others. The body deposits various minerals within and around the joints causing pain and inflammation to the surrounding tissues.

-Immune Modulated arthritides are triggered by the body’s own immune system. Scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus are two examples of this classification. These are often referred to as autoimmune because your body is attacking itself.

Conservative treatment for each of the above can include manipulative therapies, soft tissue mobilization, nutritional supplementation and various forms of exercise although specific recommendations should be made for each. It is very useful for patients to know some of the broad classifications in order to best communicate with their health care practitioners. Keeping track of your family history is also important.

An exercise that is highly beneficial for everyone that will also prepare you for the slopes is simply standing on one leg. To apply the above principles simply stand on one leg with your shoes off. Tilt your body forward while maintaining a neutral spine. Keep your toes pointing to the floor to keep your hips “square”. Slowly stand back up and extend your leg out in front of you. Repeat this 5 to 10 times on one leg and then switch to the other side or alternate between both for 20. Once you can do this without losing your balance add some resistance such as a band or a kettle bell. Make sure that your form is correct before you progress to a more difficult phase. Adding an unstable surface allows you to push your stabilizer muscles to the limit. Using a wobble board or a foam pad simulates the unstable surface that you will be skiing on in fresh powder.

You will be able to apply these principles to almost any exercise. For those who can not start with weight bearing exercise because of injury or inability you will add another step. Start on the ground on your back, bend your knees so that your feet are on the floor and then raise your hips. This is called a glut bridge and it will help strengthen your hips and the muscles around your knee. After some time you will be able to continue to weight bearing, resistance and then an unstable surface.

These are some ideas for getting ready for the ski season. I have never felt in more control on the slopes.
